Having pulled up our old parkay floor with bitumen adhesive layer we discovered that we had no real dpm to speak of. We have gone for a plastic membrane topped with a Forbo quick fit mdf sub floor and karndean flooring. We now come to fit skirting boards and the recommendation by Forbo is that we leave a 10mm gap between the skirting and the wall fixed on vertical batons, to allow the floor to breath and so as not to force any moisture up the wall. Do we really need to leave a 10mm gap? It will look bad and collect dirt? Is there a breathable filler we could use or any other ideas?

The bitumen would have formed dpm, and it needed no ventilation, don't see why the new floor would need any.Moisture is more likely to be absorbed by the skirting than brickwork.
