Hi all,

In my last home I had used retail matt paint and I found that it would easily get smudged / stained. So when I was going to paint my new home, a few people recommended that I use trade vinyl matt instead. I was told it had additives that would reduce the smudges / stains and make it easier to clean.

So I have just painted the house in Johnstone's Covaplus Vinyl Matt (Brilliant White paint). I did 2 coats of this paint - in some areas even 3 coats. The house is a mixture of newly skimmed walls (that have been left to dry for over 3 months), as well as already painted walls.

However, I'm finding the same issues. Just the other day I was coming down from the loft and my dirty clothes must have touched the walls. It left behind some marks, so I went and grabbed a wet cloth and lightly rubbed off the marks. I noticed that when I was doing this, the cloth had also lifted off some of the paint. Anyway I came back the next day and found that the wall was still not clean. See pic below:

I'm gutted by this. I spent so much time prepping and then painting the whole house with this paint. I'm kind of wishing I'd just gone with silk paint now.

Have I done something wrong with my painting? Or is there a specific way that stains have to be removed?

Also depends on how harsh the stain is.

I'm not being funny but you did clean the wall and prep the surface before painting, right?

Johnstone's Covaplus don't have scrub rating and not that smooth Vs a durable emulsion.

You want something that levels smoother and pigment is embedded in the paint resin.

Johnstone's cleanable would have been better.
Valspar premium is also very good.

If you wash paint over you have to use something like sugar soap and a warm damp microfiber cloth.
Never use bleach or detergent.
You're never going to wash a vinyl matt paint and tbh I don't think there are paints that do wash well without showing signs
