Hi there.

We need a bit of advice.

We are in the process of getting our kitchen and utility gutted and swapped over. One of the things we will need to do is the flooring.

Our house is 12 years old and has tiling in kitchen/utlitiy area and also some in the hall and downstairs WC. We were thinking that at the same time as sorting the kitchen area flooring that we would do the rest to and have it one nice flow so to speak.

The current tiles are a sort of "textured look/feel" so are not totally flat and uniform. Would it be possible to put down a self levelling type compound over the top of these to provide a flat surface before putting a new surface down (probably thinking about some decent vinyl tiles - professionally fitted).

Usually i would want to rip out the old ones first but my concern is that when we replaced the flooring in the upstairs bathroom, the tiles were simply welded onto the chipboard flooring. It took absolutely ages to tiny piece by tiny piece chisel all those tiles off. The area we need to do downstairs is 8 times the amount so do not want to create problems/delay were it is not absolutely necessary.

Is it likely to be easier to take off the old tiles from a concrete base rather than from a wooden floor base?

What would be the timescales to do the levelling and do the flooring - would it be wise to split that work up and do the levelling first, then do the rest of the kitchen and then finish off with the flooring when the cabinets etc are all in place?

thanks for reading - ps anyone know of a good flooring person around the rugby/warwcikshire area?

Clearing a concrete floor is easier as the concrete should not break up easily like chipboard.
