Hi folks have a problem with an old "96" boiler just trying to find out if its worth fixing or should i dump and start again. The boiler fires up runs for about 15 or 20 minutes till the system is warmed up then goes straight to "lock out". If you restart it in again fires and runs but for a much shorter time period any ideas, is this something a good service might sort its certainly due .one I have to admit?

The whole point about annual servicing ( done properly ) is to keep the boiler working correctly.

I dont understand why you seem surprised that when you have not serviced it regularly it is not working well!

They are quite repairable by anyone who has the right expertise.

have i understood your answer to my question correctly Agile is that a "I don't know either?"

THATS THE PROBLEM IT GOES STRAIGHT TO LOCKOUT NO OTHER LIGHT I CAN SEE!!

"THATS THE PROBLEM IT GOES STRAIGHT TO LOCKOUT NO OTHER LIGHT I CAN SEE!!"

sorry lads was'nt shouting in frustration i had left the caps on by mistake honest!

You mean just the led thats on its own is lit (red)

Or no lights whatsoever.

As far as I recall the light is a flame failure lockout.

This would result from a flame failure which could be caused by many different causes. All would require a competent CORGi engineer and is most likely an incorrect adjustment of operating parameters.

Hold continuity tester on aps until boiler fails, does aps drop momentarily?

Obviously anyone who knows anything has already cleaned fan venturi, lubed fan.

Does it do it on heating and hot water? Check thermostats, or relevant thermostat.

Check low gas pressure, bit strange on this model, something like bridge out the thermostat if I remember rightly, check with vokeara though.

Check high gas pressure by running a few taps full pelt.

thanks for the suggestions lads the thing I can't get my head round is why it runs for 20 mintes or so when first fired up???

"You mean just the led thats on its own is lit (red) "

yes Scatmanjohn goes straight to the red light on the left as you look at the boiler.

Simple it is overheating, or it thinks it is overheating. If the sensors are right, the max gas pressure is too high or the boiler is sludged up, if they are wrong they need changing.

The overheat light is the second from the left so i doubt that it is overheating.

I take it the led with a small picture of a flame with a line through it is lit during the fault.

Could be a few things...Not really DIY..I'd advise you to get someone in.

thanks Scatmanjohn is there any harm in making sure the flue is not blocked for instance? noticed when i turned it on and went outside with some rubbish that there was no sign of exhaust gases from the pipe although i could still hear it working could the flue be "cleaned" safely by a DIYer how would i go about that safely?

If the flue was the problem the flue led would light up, but its not.

The only advise i can offer is to get someone in who knows that boiler.
