Volt sticks, how deep in a wall will one locate a cable ,can you recommend a good one thanks.

Depends massively on what the wall is made from, how large the cable is, and how good (or bad) the voltsitck is.

Sometimes they illuminate on a wall with no cables, or if waved about in the air, or pointed at certain types of electrical appliances.

You may have guessed already that voltsitcks are not suitable devices for locating cables in walls or anywhere else.

They are not designed to find cables in walls.

They are a useful tool providing you know their limitations and methods of use.

The better quality will work with reasonable static results but the cheap

ones only use a reed switch and smallest knock can change the sensitivity. Proper kits

one is over £80 and the only type which really work consist of a transmitter and receiver and the two work together. Some of the tester

can detect cables some feet under the ground but again these are not sold at DIY prices.
Where it is very important the norm it to Hire for the job because of the high prices.

Thanks for the information,i was thinking more about the volt sticks like fluke.

They are ideal to checking if an accessable cable is live however, such as a flex to an appliance, but i'd never trust my life to one.
