VOLVO V50 Key Error.

Can anyone please advise if there is a simple explanation for the "key error" display and failure for all functions which occurs on the odd occasion. The Volvo is the V50 year 2005.
A number of Volvo repair agents have been contacted but want to do a full diagnostic check ( sounds expensive !)
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunatly this is going to be a Volvo diag job, There may be specialists you could search for to contact to see if they will help as they might have diag gear that will read/code your Volvo.

Is the key failing to start or lock/unlock?? Does another key work ok??

The lock / unlock works OK but the key fails when trying to start.The fault has only happened a couple of times and is currently working.
the last time that the problem occured a sound was heard after a couple of seconds like a relay operating then car could be started.

Do you have another key to try and start the car? If that worked without fault then your main key is faulty, if they both fail at the very least it sounds like the transponder pickup ring that surrounds the ignition barrel might be at fault.

You really need to get it on someones diag to pick up any fault codes that might be stored or do some live data analysis if thats possible on this system.

We only have the one key so will do as you suggest.
