Hi. My neighbour has a '98 golf 1.6 auto, and for ages ( over a year ) he has had an intermittent problem with it stalling at junctions. He has taken it several times to our local VW garage, they have checked over it and always came back with the same answer, it never happens when they test it. He is at his wits end with it, has spent an absolute fortune, and just wants it resolved before he sells it. I am expecting some of you may say ' tell him to take it back to the garage and make them keep the thing until its fixed', but he wants to be armed with some useful info beforehand. Any useful advise welcome. Thanks.

The throttle body causes problems on these cars. They can gum up, and are prone to going out of sinc. A good clean and/or re-setting might cure it. Re-setting need to be done with diagnostic equipment.

also check the idle valve on the top of the engine as if this is cloged it will cut out when idling.
