w/wipers mind of their own

Hi
I have a BMW 320i 1989 auto.
I can be driving happily along and the windscreen washers come on without me touching the stalk. the only way to turn them off is to turn the ignition off and then re-start. This is an intermittent fault it can happen 2 or 3 times a week or not at all.
Any help would be appreciated.

sounds as if the fault is in the stalk/switch,easiest way is to change it.
