Hi,

I'm installing a shower in the corner of my bathroom and plan to use acrylic wall panels on the walls. The walls are brick, plastered with skim and then currently have standard 4" white tiles from floor to ceiling. I've started removing the tiles and they're mostly coming off easily. The plaster behind seems sound, although isn't perfectly plumb or level.

I'm looking for advice on what's best to do to the walls before installing the acrylic panels. I understand the panels are only 3-5mm thick, so I'm assuming they're not particularly rigid on their own, so do I need a perfectly flat/level subsurface to fix them to? Or will they be OK just applied to the existing plastered walls?

Would I be better chipping off the plaster and boarding the walls?

If so, what type of board should I use - obviously with the acrylic panels, I've not got an issue with the weight that I'd have with wall tiles.

Cheers!

We've just took delivery of 10mm aqua panels. The bathroom fitter will be fitting them in a few months time and I think he is using something called, 'Hardie backer'(?), as the base
They came with 2 tubes of adhesive for each panel, (2440 x 1200mm)
If your panels are only 3-5mm thick they are going to be quite flexible and may follow any uneven contours in the wall.
If I've got the Hardie backer name wrong, someone will correct me.

So long as there are not high spots should be ok , the shower panels come in all thickness from 4mm , the twin wall panels are very rigid .
