Is it possible to go overboard with wall ties....already spent £30 and only four courses up on a smallish build?

You need to put them in every 900mm horizontally and every 450mm vertically, but every 225mm at openings.

And extra on the DPC to hold the insulation up

Nope: 600 horizontal with cavity at or greater than 75mm.

Nope. 750mm horizontally 76mm to 100mm NHBC standards. It's a 2 car garage being built, so the cavity could be 50mm.
