Wall Tiling onto plasterboard

Hello forum my first post.

appoligies if this is a repost, but i've been unable to find a diffinitive answer.

As my username may suggest i'm not very experienced in these matters so i could really do with your help.

I'm tiling a bathroom and have a few questions:

1. Can I tile directly onto plasterboard or is it necessary to seal/skim the plasterboard as it is going into a bathroom/showeroom.

2. If so which side needs to be facing?
