Wall Unit Damaged

Hello everyone,

I have recently moved in to a new flat and there is a lovely wood looking fire place glossed (I don't know the word for it) but the top of it is damaged and I have no idea how to repair it correctly.

I have attached some photos, they seem to be quite big on here.

If any one could advise me I would greatly appreciate

Are you sure the Fireplace is wood, it looks like cast Iron to me.

and the mantelpiece has has been painted many times and the paint is peeling off.
