IIRC mine just had holes near the top at the back, close enough to the top so that drilling the wall at a slight downwards angle meant the screw went in at a slight angle, and a screwdriver over the front rim worked fine. No possibility though of any adjustments if you drilled the holes cockeyed, or if the holes in the uplighter weren't in line..
I've got others with glass "bowls" that have a separate backing plate you fix to the wall, and I've seen uplighters with keyholes.
The moral surely should be to read the installation instructions, and see what they say?
Thinking about lilly's problem (hopefully now solved), maybe an answer would have been to use hex or cap-head screws, and a spanner or allen key to tighten them?
