Help!

I'm wallpapering into a corner and half way up the wall it slants out (a chimney breast from another room). I'm stuck as to how to get it looking right with the coloured patterned vinyl i'm using

Unfortunately, because of the shape, you will not get the pattern to match exactly. The diagonal external corner is longer than the internal vertical corner (remember pythagoras' theorem :( ) and so you will not get around the it in one sheet without the pattern running off line.

The best way is to run one full length from the top (picture rail) of the flat (rectangular) face to the floor and a seperate triangular piece on the end. You will need to run one of the pieces around the external corner 5-10mm so that you can overlap it with the other. The choice of which piece is really determined by what would be the least noticeable to you but, if done well, shouldn't be that visible either way. I would try to get the pattern to match as best I could and cut through both layers of the overlap with a sharp blade to achieve a flush finish. However, this is not always possible, and can be tricky for the inexperienced, so leaving the overlap may be necessary. As you have a vinyl paper, you should use a vinyl to vinyl overlap adhesive if doing this .

Another way would be to use a plastic corner strip to hide the join but that will make the area more obvious and look like a botched job.

I hope this makes some sense, but trying to explain the method isn't the easiest thing to do.

I think some loss of pattern repeat will occur, sometimes in these situations it is often better to make it into a feature.
