Just a bit of gentle persuasion. I'm sure something similar went on at Longbridge. Lots of striking going on in those days.

Interesting to think that in 1983 the younger Poles would have spent their whole lives under communism, and the idea that the Wall could come down in 1989* would have seemed ridiculous. In fact the Soviet Empire was already crumbling from within.
In 1983 a Polish electrician named Lech Wałęsa had been released from prison and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Poland seems to be going in a somewhat alarming direction these days though.
I know, I can remember reading articles about East Germany and the Berlin wall, then suddenly it was down.
I have a Hungarian labourer, he can remember life in communist times, when every village would have a party informant.
I must admit these countries have done well since joining the EU
These countries - The Soviet Union - were as communist as North Korea is democratic.

They've been invaded by the Germans and Russians. Some countries learn from history, and don't want to have a third invasion from something that's equally dangerous.
That's why there are advantages in a co-operative alliance with like-minded friends.
The men who founded the European movement had just survived the worst war the world has ever seen. The older ones had also survived the second-worst war the world has ever seen. Nothing was more important to them than preventing a recurrence, and preventing one was the their overriding aim.
It's so sad to see the small-minded Quitters and their belligerent attitude to our neighbours.
