We have just installed a new close coupled WC. It is a Madrid toilet from B&Q. When we took the flushing and filling mechanisms out of the plastic bag a small red washer fell out with them. It is not at all obvious where it goes.

It is however obvious that it is required because the toilet now tops itself up every 10-15 minutes.

Could anyone please give us a clue as to where this washer should go?

Thanks in advance

It is however obvious that it is required because the toilet now tops itself up every 10-15 minutes.

how does it top its self up every 10 mins if you haven't flushed it
the float valve isn't to high so overflowing
or the flushvalve isn't passing.

IT seems to be permanently overflowing a little bit so that it keeps having to top itself up, however the float valve has been adjusted downwards 3 times now and it doesn't solve the problem.

Any ideas?

is it overflowing or the flushvalve washer at the base is not shutting fully ?

or is it the float valve not shutting off ?

I'm not 100% sure but think that the flush valve may not be fully closing.

How would I be able to tell?

turn the water supply off.
and watch the rear of the pan.
can you see water trickling down into the pan.

I've just switched the water off and the water is still running down the pan so I assume that it means the flush valve is not shutting fully.

How do I fix that then?

make sure its lower than the overflow first.

if waters lower than the overflow then its the washer on the bottom of the flush valve.

you can either flush it a few times, sometimes they settle and seal.
or hold the flushvalve half way down and twist it will come apart and you can check the washer for seating.

or worst they are so cheap they never seal and you end up changing it for a better quality valve.

let us know what occurs.

I'll have a go, thanks for the speedy responses, much appreciated.

I have tried to unscrew the valve and adjust it and have retried again a couple of more times however the issue remains!

This is very frustrating obviously!

Could the pan not being level be an issue? The pan is not far off but having looked down the central overflow with a torch while there is water in the cistern I think that the leak is coming from one side of the cistern.

The higher side seems to be where the leak is coming from, so was wondering if the minor slope may be the issue?

The only other thing I have left to try is a new washer, which I plan on doing tomorrow but thought I'd ask about the slope now to get some views.

Thanks in advance.

the flush valve comes in two parts.
a part that fixs to the cistern the the top half that fits to the bottom.

is it leaking between the rubber seal and the bottom part or the bottom part and the cistern ?

did you fit the flush valve or was it already fitted.
if the cistern has a slight lump around the hole when it was made maybe the bottom part didn't seal when you fitted and tightened the big nut underneath

Its leaking between the washer on the top part and the bottom part.

The bottom part appears to be fixed fine and sealed properly.

The washer came on the top part, but I have had a look at it and checked it over and it looks fine. I did turn it upside down to see if it made a difference but no joy.

yes useally turning them over can cure the problem. on a older one anyway as overtime they curl up and don't seal but yours is new so washer should be fine.

have you checked the plastic bottom or the seal for any lump, excess plastic etc when made.
if not i have a had few that i have just fitted a complete new flush but of better quauilty because they haven't sealed or worked properly.
its not an uncommon fault.

So does the slight slope not matter then?

I hope not, but just wanted to check.

I'll look at the connection to check that there are no raised bits etc but think that its ok.

Should I go for the new flush option, can I leave the bottom half in place? Are they universal? Or will that need replacing also?

THanks again
