Washer types: polythene, rubber or fibre

Anyone got tips on where and when the various types of washers should be used:

rubber, polythene, fibre

Only generalising....
Polythene - tank connectors, wash hand basin waste, overflows
Rubber - flexible tap connectors, washing maching connectors, tap washers - where the joint is captive
Fibre - compression or copper tap connectors, into ball valves, C/H pump connections, immersion heaters. Basically these washers musn't be allowed to spread.
