When I try to wash a load of clothes, the tub fills with dirty water. Just suddenly started today. Water has orangish tint to it. Water coming from other sources (sinks, toilets) is clean. The dirty water appears only in the washing machine. Any explanation is helpful.

You will have to isolate it to the supply or the machine, disconnect the feed pipe & use it to fill a bucket. If that is the same then you have a problem with your pipework. The only thing I would think it could be in the machine would be a build up of sludge in the feed in valve for some reason.

Does the water smell dirty? If so, it may be that dirty water is coming out of the drain into the waste pipe, and getting into the tub. This often happens if the drain hose has not been looped up enough

It might be you have an errant sock or something trapped between the drum and the tub, or under the agitator if a top-loader. In some cases wildlife might have crawled in.

If the water is orange (rust coloured) but does not smell dirty, it may be you have a piece of iron or steel trapped somewhere. This is often an underwire from a bra. If you fill a large glass jar with rusty water, the orange sediment will slowly settle to the bottom of the jar. This may take a day or so if it is very fine.

If you have a home with iron water supply pipes, inside or in the street, then rust may come through the pipes, especially if they have recently been disturbed or repaired, or if the water flow direction has been reversed (this is done periodically to prevent sediment or stagnant water accumulating in unused sections of the water main. In this case, just run the taps for a few minutes until the water runs clear. You neighbours will have had the same problem if it is the supply pipes.

is this a top loader?

Slim possibility of syphoning if it is not your supply water to the machine
