Hi, can you help please? I understand that a washing machine can be plumbed in on cold fill only but do both hoses have to be used & if so is a Y connecter fitted to hoses or cold water pipe?

Yes I think you mean can a washing machine with 2 valves hot and cold, be used on cold fill only. The answer is yes, but you need to provide water to BOTH valves in order for all programmes to work properly. This is done as you say with a Y piece that goes on the cold tap and then run 2 hoses from that one to each valve.

If your'e confident enough you can piggy back the switched wire that runs to the hot valve onto the switch wire that goes to the cold valve, hence the col valve is energised when hot water is requested, only 1 pipe to the cold valve would be needed in this case, but all the powder if you use drawer will have to go into the cold side compartment
