My washing machine drain is connected to the sink drain (before the u bend). Whenever the washing machine pumps out water, part of the sink fills with water.

First of all is this hygienic, and second is there any other way of making a connection to the sink drain so that water does not back up the sink.

has it always come back into the sink? maybe the sink needs unblocking?
as Breezer say's 'a stand pipe' is ideal, but in the meantime try a sink unblocker.
