My washing machine drain is connected to the sink drain (before the u bend). Whenever the washing machine pumps out water, part of the sink fills with water.

First of all is this hygienic, and second is there any other way of making a connection to the sink drain so that water does not back up the sink. :?

has it always come back into the sink? maybe the sink needs unblocking?
as Breezer say's 'a stand pipe' is ideal, but in the meantime try a sink unblocker.
