We have a waste treatment plant that is working fine and hasn't been de-sludged in ten years.

There is of course sludge in one chamber and cleaned water in the other which discharges as it should.

Do I need to get the sludge pumped out regularly or will it gradually be digested and just replaced by untreated effluent?

It sounds like you have a septic tank that works well.......obviously that can largely depend on how many people are using it and what actually goes down there.
It's very important not to allow solids to enter the outlet drain so I'd get the thing pumped out and see how much solids are removed.....note that date, observe the tank regularly and see how things are in say, four years time.

When I was a retained fireman I helped to get a body out of one and the whole crew stank for ages and the appliance was banned from the appliance bay for three weeks.Bob
