Hi all,
Am going to paint some cornices that are in an old victorian house. At the moment they are painted with gloss but the new owner doesn't like the smell of oil based gloss. Can I use a two coats of a water based gloss or even eggshell after rubbing down or do I NEED to apply a water based undercoat and then a coat of gloss / eggshell?

I don't think it would really matter,,, as long as the cornices get a good preping, then a couple of coats of w/based gloss/eggshell should be ok. I know most painters don't have much time for the stuff anyway. You can't beat the oil based paint,,,, but if your customer doesn't like/want the smell of oil based paint in the house, then there's nothing else you can use, other than water based.
