Water Damage: French Drain Or Something Else?

Previous owners hadn’t done much to divert water away from the main wall (Victorian stepped foundation). Reckon some new bricks and pointing may be needed?

But to avoid problems in future, do you think a French drain to the nearby gulley would work best, or something else?

(The shingled trench pictured doesnt seem to have a pipe in it btw)

Yeh this really needs a slot drainage channel right around and over the door threshold too.
This patio is the same height as your floor level so will be higher than the damp proof course(if your house even has one) which would not even meet code these days and yes over time as each winter passes water will be creeping in amoungst the brickwork etc which no where else to go and finding it’s way into the house etc.
