Is it normal, when emptying a bathroom basin, for water to appear in the shower waste? I didn't do the plumbing in the bathroom - only recently moved in. Thanks in advance.

You need to check and clear the basin and shower traps of any blockages first. If possible undo them and clean out the gunge and hair. An old fashioned plunger is very effective at drawing out blockages further into the pipework.
Air in the system can suck or push water where it shouldn't be going, so if cleaning doesn't work, an air admittance valve on the basin might.

Blup

Main waste run further downstream from the basin connection to the run will be restricted. As shower and basin are on the same waste, when it becomes restricted then the water take path of least resistance and flows up into the shower rather than out to the stack/drain.

Wet vac, block up basin waste/overflow holes and remove shower trap cup etc and wet vac from there. Unless you can get to the waste run from the other end at the drain/stack end.
