water mains service valve (outside)

hi,

when turning off the mains water supply outside does it need to be fully screwed clockwise untill it wont turn anymore or just turning 45 degrees???

please help

It depends on the type!

Older ones needed several turns.

Ones in plastic boxes mostly need several turns but I have seen some that only need a 1/4 turn.
