Hi All,

I'm looking for some advice. My central heating has ceased to work, and upon investigation I've realised that it's because the wiring in the water pump is melted. I'm quite happy to replace the pump myself, but I am concerned that this could be a symptom of a more serious problem. Is it likely that the wiring has just packed up? Or is it more wise to assume a fault with my electrics?

Any advice would be much appreciated,

NJ

The water pump is a wilo RS 50, and the melted wiring is in the little black wiring box attached to the pump.

Thanks for the swift reply.

melted wiring means too many amps drawn, so its likely that its just the pump which has packed in (seized up/ tight, short circuit etc) however before the wiring melted it should have took out the fuse (possibly 3 amp?) on the circuit. you have to ask why it did not? is there a fuse? is the correct rating fuse fitted?

or, it could simply be that the wire to the pump was faulty and shorted out, either way you should test the pump to see if it is broken. do you have a multimeter?

Not always.

Melted insulation is caused by excessive heat - an over-current fault is only one of the possible causes. However....

I tend to agree that this is likely.

Yes it should be checked, and yes it should be 3A.
