I had a problem with my washing machine which required a new valve and the engineer repairing it showed me some brown gritty sediment which he said was coming from my water softener which is relatively new. I’m trying to work out what the issue might be as there is no obvious sediment in anything else connected to the water softener. The washing machine has a filter where the valve is but enough of the sludge had got through to affect it. The water softener replaced the exact same model which was 10 years old, could there be an issue with the original pipework which I haven’t replaced?

A water softeners will not filter grit or sediment that comes through pipes.
