Waterproofing holes in wood

I need to ask a stupid question and my google-fu has let me down.

Wooden door made from softwood. Varnished and protected. Need to drill holes for fixings. Fixings are all stainless steel.

Do I need to worry about water ingress potentially rotting the wood inside? Should I use some sort of sealant prior to using bolts and screws?

Or am i just overthinking this?

All hinge cut outs etc need varnish as well to seal entire door.

Thanks. sometimes, when I'm trying to sleep, my mind starts wandering. It was stuck in my head all day.

Thankfully the hinges are not going to be recessed. Tee hinges so originally was going to screw them to the door. Then I thought about shoving bolts through instead.

Sorry Stealthwolf, I should have checked where the door was being used first. You don't need to seal the screw holes, but using stainless steel screws would be a good idea if you go back to the using screws. But Foxholes right in sealing under cuts in the wood, and if you're using bolts, then yes, you've got an unsealed hole, but the bolts get tightened so should seal it back up.

Thanks. I was asking about the side gate but then when googling this issue, someone suggested swapping screws for bolts on shed doors for security reasons. So I tried to expand the question and make it more generalised.
