Wax polish vs Varnish for stair and banister rails

I`ve just finished stripping the varnish of the banister and they`re sanded up ready to be finished. However, I don`t really want to put gloss or matt varnish back on and the only alternative I know of is to apply a wax finish. My questions are : varnish is easy to wipe clean - is wax?
is wax polish easy to remove when required?

What wood are they? There are alternatives depending on what you've got

Scrit, the wood is an inexpensive softwood, although it is original victorian.
