wd440 drier element fault

Hi all,
I'm replacing the drier element on my hotpoint wd440 as it has ab earth short. However when testing the feed it appears to be live, 240, continuously. Is this normal or could the stat be gone as well (possibly then cause of the element failure)

What are you testing with, if it's a neon screwdriver then forget it & get a multimeter to carry out the test. If you have a multi meter already does the 240v read live to neutral & live to earth?

Tested with multimeter, from earth point.

Fault fixed, was just the drier coil that was earthing out, stat was fine. Constant live feed to coil was ok as it is neutral/earth switched
