Hi

Our patio needs weed removal and some more mortar for the joints. The first step is removal of soil and weed from gaps. I initially bought one of those weed slicers, but I can now see they’re for weeds in a bed. (Angled head)

Any ideas? Ideally needs to go down a few inches.

Thanks

If you search for patio weed removal tool you will see some options.

Otherwise a large flat head screwdriver.

Thanks. Looks like that product is out of stock at B&Q.

Thanks. I did initially but will have another ponder. Re screwdriver - been there, done that. Dodgy back now, so need to avoid being down on hands and knees.

what weeds?
I managed to get rid of prominent ones with my useless strimmer. It’s mainly soil in the gaps now. Should have been clearer. Thanks

glyphosate based weed killer - little point in removing what you can see, it will just grow back next week
and some weeds don't need soil, they will easily grow out of the hardcore and sand under the patio, they just need to be able to see daylight

so poison it, allow a few weeks, rake the mortar joint out and repoint it, (and repoint the full depth not the top 10mm like some lazy builders do

Another vote for glyphosate, but not in the squirty, ready diluted bottles - that makes it very expensive. Buy 5L of concentrate, dilute to instructions, in a spray bottle, and spray, on the leaves - it only works on the growing leaves. Leave for 10 days, and it will be brown, and dead. I fill a 10L pump up sprayer bottle, and go round with it, a couple of times each year.

@Harry Bloomfield Are we related ;) I too buy 5L concentrate (Rosate) and dilute as per instructions to fill my large 15L wheel about sprayer. Twice annually will see my chosen area weed free until the following spring

I thought it said wedding tool at first....I thought this could be interesting

that should be good for removing stubborn winnits

Thanks for all the v helpful replies. Forgot to mention I drenched the joints with Weedol. Only thing is I think it may be the glyphosate free variety.

It's no use applying it to the joints that have no weeds, it needs to get on the green bits of the weed.
