Weeds Growing Through Tarmac

Hello

So I wanted to patch up my drive way up. The driveway is made of tarmac. However around the edges we had to break up the Tarmac and remove it.

So I was left with a big gap outside my front door. I decided to buy the coldlay tarmac from my local DIY store.

It's not particularly cheap stuff either. I laied the tarmac and used a big metal mallet thing to compress it the best I could.

How six months later weeds are growing through it

Should I have put some kind of membrane down?

What weeds?

Most weeds grow down into Tarmac (and similar surfaces) from seeds that blow there. E.g. Dandelions. Only a few grow up through it, mainly brambles.
