Weird phone problem

A couple of times in the past week I've had phone calls from my mother where I haven't been able to hear her, but she has been able to hear me. When she phones back (or if I phone her back) it's then fine.

The same thing happened yesterday when somebody else called, so the problem must be with my phone/phone line.

Has anyone encountered this before?

Any ideas as to the cause?

"one way transmission"

In most cases, changing the phone of the affected user fixes the problem. The rest of the time it's a problem in the exchange equipment.
