Wetherspoons

I’m happy to have a phone (noise) free pub. Ta Tim.
What us oldies don’t get is though, folk are making money from their phones, so they are a well used business tool.
This is actually them making daily bread, in some cases.

My youngest missus is a content creator. She sometimes uses our house for vids. Nice looking lass that gave her job up at a shopping outlet and makes thousands more than she ever did there. She gets sent freebies or is asked to spend a weekend at a holiday cottage, in return for content. She gets paid ok money.
your youngest missus ? how many wives do you have ?

I hope everywhere else follows suit. I was on a plane a few weeks ago, we were grounded for about 45 mins. The lad next to me was watching FB vids on his phone at full volume. When I stared at him, about to tell him to STFU, he initially laughed and genuinely thought that I was enjoying his videos as much as he was. Thankfully he got the message soon enough and shut it off. But people should not have to be told. It's common courtesy to not make excessive noise in public; we can't rely on everyone to understand this so fining them might give them a good bit of revision material.

In fact, I had an idea whilst on holiday that Police and CSOs should be allowed paintball guns. So anyone caught littering, disturbing the peace etc, can get their skin bruised and clothes stained and no-one dies. Win win

The pub chain Wetherspoons has banned customers from playing music or taking calls on speaker after growing complaints about the noise.

The company announced it had introduced the ban across its 792 pubs, saying sounds from smartphones and tablet computers had become an “increasing problem in recent years”. The firm said in a statement: “Following complaints from customers who are being driven nuts by other people’s videos and amplified phone conversations, Wetherspoon has asked customers to switch their phones to silent or to use earphones.”

Tim Martin, said: “In a world dominated by other people’s music and amplified sound, Wetherspoon pubs are an oasis of tranquillity and contemplation. In order to avoid customers being driven chicken jalfrezi by a cacophony of sound, we are kindly asking phone users to pipe down.”

I can't think of any pubs that would allow punters to play loud music on their phone/tablet. I suspect the statement from Wetherspoons is just a PR thing.

"Wetherspoon pubs are an oasis of tranquillity" - Jesus, who are they kidding? I pop in to 'Spoons from time to time but in many, but not all cases, they are busy because they are only marginally more expensive than a 2L bottle of cider on a park bench.

If people want a phone free experience, go find a Samuel Smith pub. 5 Years ago(?), I was running early to see a customer and she was running late. I had 30 minutes to kill and decided to pop in to a pub. It was a Samuel Smith, about 1 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. There were 3 customers in the pub. I purchased a pint and took out my laptop to do some email work. An apologetic bar man approached me and told me that I wasn't allowed to use my laptop (I wqsn't making any noise). I asked if I could use my laptop in the empty garden- nope. He went on to say that the chain/brewery policy is that you cannot use laptops, tablets or phones (period). If a punter receives a call, they are expected to walk out to take the call.

I asked why they do not have any signs to let prospective punters know. He pointed to a sign on the inside of the door, I replied that, perhaps, the sign should be on the outside of the door.

Roll forward, if I unwittingly walk in to a Samuel Smith pub, I do an about turn and find the next nearest pub.

A YouGov poll last year suggested 62% of people would back the Lib Dem call for fines of up to £1,000 for “headphone dodgers” who play music out loud on buses and trains. The poll of 6,815 British adults found almost three-quarters of pensioners would support the fines, while people aged between 18 and 24 were split 47-43 in favour.

I can't fight my way out of a paper bag... there have been a few times when I have played the mosquito noise on my phone when little s-hits have been playing loud music on the bus. I make sure that they are too young to lamp me.

The "mosquito" noise is a high frequency noise that most people over the age of 24(?) cannot hear.

I've never heard music played in spoons or on bus. Been in news.
Can't say I've ever been bothered with audible phone calls.
Maybe it's a big city thing?

My only Samuel Smith pub I think Ive ever been to was
I think The Dover Castle
Weymouth Mews in Marylebone, London

We was on a job backing Harley Street for a good 7 months.
On a Friday is get my lap top and sit by the fire. 2 or 3 pints and no one bothered me.

My first visit I was expecting to get turned away because of my builders outfit.

Not a chance I even got chang out of a 5iva
The pub was facing the back of the Polish embassy

It wasn't much more expensive than a JD.spoon

Yeah, they are cheap, they only sell their own branded booze (and from memory, even the soft drinks are their own brand). Although I maligned their laptop policy, as a brewery/chain, they are not money grabbing profit maximisers. They are still family owned.

They seem to have a Victorian ethos, perhaps even methodist (ie. you can drink but not get drunk and you are not allowed to enjoy yourself). It is a tad odd.

Even ankle-biters have their ways of menace...keep yer eyes on any of 'em called Dennis.;)

I heard a story about a guy who went into a public toilet to take a dump. As he sat down a voice nextdoor said "Are you all right?" He said "Yes I suppose so". The voice then said "What have you been up to?" He said "Just the usual things, why?" thinking what's going on here, am I being propositioned or something? The voice then said "I'll have to ring you back in a bit, some **** keeps talking to me."
:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

That was funny I remember that.

The noise problem is the talking really loud because everyone is talking really loud. The louder it gets the louder people need to talk untill you almost have to shout. It needs someone to come out with a bell every 15 mins and then everyone start from scratch again with normal voices.

It’s people shouting into phones whilst cycling furiously on pavements that gets me.
