what external seal for sash windows

I have wooden, original sash windows in a stone built property. The mastik/sealant around the windows is cracked and falling off, probably not been replaced for 25 years. I have now scraped it all off and am wondering what to replace it with. Is a standard silicone sealent ok to use or is there something else?
