What fIxings for roof timbers?

Hi,

I am soon to be putting the pitched roof on my garage but I have no idea what fixings I should be using to hold the timber structure together. Should I use nails or screws or does it not really matter as long as they are of a decent size? Main reason I ask is that the garage requires building regs sign off and I want to keep them happy.

I prefer screw over nails as they allow adjustment should you make a mistake and cause little movement while fixing.
For big timbers you need big fixings.
