What flooring adhesive should I use?

Hi,

I'm in the final stages of restoring an old fireplace and chimney breast in my lounge and I'm ready to lay the hearth.

I have some 600x600x15 pieces of Brazilian Slate that I'll be using but I'm not sure what type of adhesive and grout to use.

I had considered Sand & Cement mortar but I would prefer the bed to be fairly thin so was thinking tile adhesive instead. Of course it needs to be heat resistant but I'd also like it to be as waterproof as possible too so as to reduce the possibility for rising damp....although I have laid a waterproof screed so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Any guidance anybody can give is greatly appreciated.

Use a decent Rapidest adhesive & a straight grout (BAL) which will be good up to 150 degrees C; both are waterproof but not in the sense I think you mean; the only truly waterproof adhesive/grout are expensive epoxy products which I’m sure you won’t need with the waterproof screed. I favour black quartze but don’t usually grout, I leave a very small (1/4-1/2mm) expansion gap filled with silicone. I hope you’ve installed a regulation constructional hearth below the decorative hearth?

Also take a look at this; it may help you in other areas;

As this comes up so often, I’ve put together this generic post; read the links but not all may apply to you.

You can DIY a stove install but you need to understand the Building Regs (which changed in October), submit a Building Notice & pay a fee. Your LABC will inspect &, assuming everything is OK, issue a compliance certificate; the BI may want to witness smoke & spillage tests. No compliance certificate may lead to difficulties when you come to sell your property; if cannot produce a compliance certificate in the event of a problem, your insurance company may invalidate your policy & reject any claim.

Lots of archive threads on this, & other things you have to watch out for, here a few links for you to read:

Also get at least 3 quotes from local independent HETAS installers:

You might be pleasantly surprised & you should ask yourself if you really want all the hassle & risk getting it wrong; climbing onto the roof with an 8M stainless steel snake on your back is not for the feint hearted!

Thanks Richard C and apologies for the delay in responding to your post.

We have a concrete floor throughout the room all the way into the fireplace so the constructional hearth is in place.

As far as installing the stove is concerned I decided a while back I wasn't going to do that as I knew we'd need a liner and as much as I love to save money I thought a professional HETAS install was the better option.

I took your advice and laid the slate with the BAL rapid set adhesive....which I can confirm is rapid! Just need to grout it now.

Thanks again for your advice.
