What has happened to my heating!?

After replacing the pump (maybe not needed, but it was noisy) and the boiler thermostat it all works fine again.
I guess the thermostat was initially stuck on (so the boiler overheated and created all that steam) and later was stuck off (so the boiler would not fire up).
