It seems in USA the colour of waste pipe relates to its thickness.
Does this apply to ordinary high street waste pipe in the UK?
Is there any difference between grey, white and black?

Sizewise no difference in UK, just different colour options. I was told once that white is better externally as it reflects sunlight better, so take longer to break down from the UV rays in sunlight. Grey, brown and black does fade after a few years more noticeably.

I work on the theory that black is best for condensate pipes as it absorbs solar energy..... But not this winter.

The main difference is the colour ;)

Black might absorb solar energy if there was any, but it also is a much better radiator of heat so it will cool down quicker in winter. Neither should matter because your exposed condensate pipes will be completely lagged, right?

In general you'll find that grey tends to be push-fit and white tends to be solvent weld (glued), however you can also get white push-fit and grey solvent weld!

Hmmm I'm yet to see a lagged inch and a half condensate pipe and I'm not etirely sure that I agree about black being a better radiator but I am open to be educated.
