For me, it has to be Sloppy Joe's in Key West, Florida. Baking hot outside, air conditioned inside. We went in at lunch time for a meal and a few drinks and there was already a party in full flow. Live band (Yee ha!) and the biggest plate of food I've ever seen. 8)

The best bar for me, is any bar that I visit in Prague. Not only is the lager some of the best in the world, produced more like real ale than the chemical rubbish offered to Brits, but it's less than £1 pint (.5 litre). Was even better the first time we went in 1995. Beer was approx 16p, and if you were charged 20p, you were being ripped off.

There are numerous great bars and great beers in Prague. Most bars are no nonsense, if you avoid tourist places. Always busy, because drinking beer is the number one hobby in the Czech Republic. Mainly blokes, just talking and servers regularly visiting your table with fists full of foaming mugs. Occasionally a small shot of fire water to go with the beer. Just as it should be.

And, you can still have a smoke with your beer.

Roi'Despagne (King of Spain), Grand Place, Brussels.

The Stella is good, and so is the Leffe range.

Best of all is that SHERGAR is in there, no really, there's a stuffed horse (I kid you not) in there.

I do like the Belgian fruit beers

Agree with all of that mate apart from the smoking. It actually hurts my eyes when I walk into my local and a t shirt or jumper which Ive just thrown on for an hour or two ends up straight in the wash, not too mention the poor old lungs.

Next time your over try to find Kozel, Breznak, Dalesice or Bernard pivo. A bevie might only cost a quid now which has gone up from as you say 15 odd p, it was 30p when I first came around 2000 but for us its only gone up a few kc. Ten years ago you could have a night out with 200 kc in your arsepocket and today you still can.

Kozel and Bernard are some of the best beers. I have Kozel at U Cerneho Vola, and Bernard at Pastika. Breznak was tried on a trip out of town to a village called Revnice. My favourites are Cerna Hora and Svijany beers, sold at a couple of great pubs in Zizkov.

Agree about some bars, Sometimes the smoke is a bit thick even for me.

Yeah Svijany, thats a quality beer. They had it in my local until it sadly got new management in and now its just Staro Brno an awful beer that people in Brno even call Staro Hovno. Good that you've been out of the tourist centre to Zizkov, I lived there for about 2 years its the heart of the city, although Vinohrady is a bit smarter. Used to be a tiny bar in Zizkov called Bar 21 where I lived a short stagger from, only could fit about 10 people in there but thats my favourite ever bar. Now sadly a laundrette for the students halls over the road.

The Sheraton Hotel in Lagos, where they serve chilled Star and Gulder. Not a brilliant bar but I'm usually so hot and traumatised by the traffic when I reach that hotel that the first bottle doesn't even touch the sides.

I'm not normally a Euro-fizz drinker either but in Africa you have to drink cold lagers and they are rather good in Nigeria:

Are you in Brno? Almost went there once - bit of a motor racing town too. I recall people saying that Staro Brno is classed as Staropramen is, as being a bit second class. Though bottles of Staropramen from my local Morrisons knocks spots off most other UK lagers.

Always get out of the centre (we stay in Mala Strana), and get to proper, locals' pivnice. Zizkov has a few dozen good pubs, U Sadu (next to tower) is my favourite as thet have a good selection of quality beers and good food. Other favourites in Prague are Pirvni Pivni Tramway, U Kocoura, U Cerneho Vola, U Medvidku among others. Have also done a number of trips out of Prague, as the Czech trains are very cheap, uncrowded and civilised. Can't wait 'til November.

Apologies to OP and others for rambling on about Prague.

kozel they serve here in london, its nice. pilsner urquel was always my favourite however.

Got to be the one I was standing at thirty years ago.

Hot tottie next to me: What do you do for a living?
Me: I'm a xxxxxxxx
Hot tottie: Hmm, never slept with a xxxxxxxx before.

(Joe's going to be driven even madder now - he almost found out what I do for a living, but not to be.....)
