Could someone please advise how much a good competant bricklayer should cost when based in Hertfordshire / Watford area? Can a brick layer also do stone work? How would I check they are good quality or that they are not just ordinary unskilled or semi skilled workers claiming to be proper brick layers?

Probably about 200 a day. Most bricklayers I know can do stonework, but few are any good at it. Tend to use loads of mortar to make the stones fit making really big joints.

That's probably what you would have to pay in London. You could ask if they are time served tradesmen.
