What material is This?

Please can anyone tell us what material this gas pipe is in our 1930's house.
We have had rats and they were coming up past this pipe. So it was filled with cement but a helpful neighbour and now we are panicking this was the wrong thing to do! I have attached a photo.

Malible iron, I would be very surprised if that was still a live gas supply though.
