Our cat has scratched up one section of the stairs handrail. Wrapping rope around the handrail has stopped the cat but I'd now like to repair the scratches. Can anyone advise what I should apply so that the repaired handrail is the same colour as before, so it matches the handrails on the rest of the stairs? I don't know if the existing treatment is paint, stain or something else but the handrails are quite dark. I've looked in the shops but I can't see anything that looks to be the same colour.

I had a similar problem with a chest of drawers and decided to remove the old varnish and sand down the wood til it was acceptable for a new coat of varnish.
The bottom picture shows a good deal of damage on the top of the rail and i'd choose to sand it down, use a neutral woodfilla then varnish it all back to health.
