Hey folks

I bought a house that has some crazy concrete skirting in the kitchen.

I am getting the kitchen replastered but I am wondering should I have the plasterer cover these concrete skirting or would just extra sized timber just be ok here.

You can see some bits are missing so I'm thinking of covering it in timber then filling.

What are people's thoughts here any better ideas

If I was you, I'd rip out the skirting carefully with a chisel bit attached to the drill. It depends on your experience, if you're uncomfortable in using one then a regular chisel might do the job.

After removing the skirting, a sand and cement mixture can be used to repair the wall and have it flush with the rest of the wall then you can get the kitchen replastered and add some new skirting.

I was gonna suggest the same but are we sure it is just concrete?

* Sometimes this type of skirting can contain asbestos

Built in 1958. I might err on the side of caution and gripfill and put a tall wood plank like skirting over it and then fill the top effectively encapsulating it however it seems other walls don't have it so if it was asbestos someone has removed it from literally the rest of the kitchen.

You'll get a better finish with what Jurassic spark has suggested. You can get it tested.

Has the property got concrete floors?

What I am going to do is instead do a skirting board style cover and put that over it given that its going to be partly hidden by a radiator and a corner unit its going to be seen by virtually no one so better not to mess about with asbestos and given its concreted into the wall I might end up taking a chunk of wall with me unnecessarily. I will get the plaster to do whatever they think is best and then frame just above it to give give a skirting board something to attach too then put a tall 200mm timber Infront. The only benefit if its not asbestos is that it looks a bit better but I think encapsulating and forgetting about it is just as good.
