I would like to varnish the white component of white-faced hardboard to make it smoother and more hard-wearing, preferably as cheaply as possible. Are there any restrictions to the sorts of varnishes that can be used on that surface?
Avoid solven based as they will yellow it, an acrylic waterbased one would be your best bet. But treat both sides as it may warp if you just do the front.
