What's the best way to stain veneered furniture?

I have some shelves that I'd like to stain dark brown, they are made from thick chipboard and have a beech veneer on top.
I thought about lightly sanding the veneer as it has a thin coating or varnish on it before stainging it, is this possible or are there better ways of colouring my furniture?
