What's the easiest way to build a patio?

We have a concrete slab path running to the back of our house a bit like this:

And we're wondering what is the easiest way to build a patio onto it? It doesn't have to be wood, it could be gravel, etc. Anything with the least amount of labour and cost!

Also, what style of patio would look best with the concrete slab path?

The cheapest option will be gravel. edged with a kerb or treated timber if your really hard up.
