What's this underneath my wallpaper?

Hi there, whipped off the wallpaper in my bedroom yesterday (happily came of easily along with some glue residue which i'm still taking off). Now wondering how best to prep this wall to paint over? The surface is pretty smooth, but there is this yellowy substance on the bare plaster (possibly some sort of old primer?)

I also have these very very tiny little hairline cracks (see light switch to L of pic for idea of scale). Any suggestions? Wondering if I use a primer/undercoat if it might juuust be enough to fill them (likely v wishful thinking!)

Cracks are too tiny to dig out and I'd be there for a decade.. alternatively I was thinking about sweeping over the cracks with tiny bit of easifil, then sand, prime paint? Any guidance appreciated!

Ahh great - thank you! I’ll look into this

Lining paper is lovely to work with.

I use a pasting table and a 9" roller to apply the paste to the paper. I also use the roller to paste the walls.

I then use a "vinyl smoother" to smoothen the paper.
