What is a single check valve and what is a double check valve. Should i be installing this on an outside tap?. Putting new kicthen in. The previous plumping to the out side tap simply had a stop valve to isolate the outside tap completly.

Some pictures would be nice!

I think this has come up before. A check valve is a spring loaded valve so liquid can only pass in one direction, this prevents contaminated liquid being drawn back against the normal direction of flow. Of course if the spring fails or the valve sticks open it would fail to function as intended.
A double check valve is 2 valves in a single housing, The probability of both valves failing at the same time is a lot lower.
I believe check valves are required on outside tap, filling loops for boilers, electric showers where the hose can reach into the bath water, or anywhere if there is a path back to the mains supply
