My brother is after quite a large diameter tree trunk that can be laid on it's side and used as a garden seat.

Where on earth could I get one from? Short of scouring the countryside after these gails!!?

phone a few tree surgeons, theyll sort you one out for a few quid

Have you tried your local tip/waste centre? Ours has loads of these and also top soil, manure etc free to all!!!

like the tree surgeon idea. will give that a whirl.

Interestingly, also need a load of top soil, so might try local tip for that!

better and cheaper is your local unscrupulous develpoer who is clearing trees from a site. Tree surgeons often sell decnt trunks of hardwoods to local sawmills etc but a developer may let you take them away for free as he wants rid of them asap and especially if they were subject to preservation orders. I have many weird and wonderful chainsaw furniture items from this source.
